Penicillin G molecule

Penicillin G molecule. Animation of a molecule of the antibiotic drug penicillin G, also known as benzylpenicillin. This was the first penicillin that Alexander Fleming isolated from the mould Penicillium chrysogenum in 1940. Most penicillin today is synthetic. Penicillin G is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat many bacterial infections including pneumonia, tonsillitis, syphilis and meningococcal meningitis. The atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (black), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue), oxygen (red) and sulphur (yellow).

Tetracycline antibiotic molecule

Tetracycline antibiotic molecule. Animation of a molecule of the broad spectrum antibiotic tetracycline. It is used to treat bacterial respiratory and ear infections, acne and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (black), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue) and oxygen (red).

Erythromycin in action, animation

Erythromycin macrolide antibiotic in action, animation. Erythromycin is a bacteriostatic drug that stops bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. The first few frames show the process of protein synthesis inside a ribosome. tRNA (transfer ribonucleic acid) molecules (yellow) add amino acids (green) to the growing protein chain (top). In the final frame a ball and stick model of erythromycin binds the ribosome halting the process.

Coronavirus inhibitor bound to Mpro viral protein

Molecular model of a coronavirus inhibitor drug (blue) bound to a viral protein. The protein (orange) is an enzyme called coronavirus main protease (Mpro), which the virus uses to produce proteins needed for its replication. Inhibiting this enzyme could be an effective way of stopping diseases caused by the virus. Coronaviruses cause a number of diseases, including the common cold, pneumonia and the new respiratory disease that emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. This new disease, officially called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019), is caused by a new form of the virus, now named SARS-CoV-2019. Like the 2003 SARS outbreak, it is a respiratory disease that is fatal in some cases, particularly in patients with existing conditions.
